President to parties: Stability during transition is responsibility of all

As if to reflect the sea change that has overtaken the country’s politics in the past week, representatives of the National League for Democracy – still officially the opposition party – were seated at the head of the table at a meeting with President U Thein Sein on 15 November.

The president had convened the meeting, with representatives of all 91 parties that contested the November 8 election, to assure them that he would oversee a smooth transition of power in a process that will continue until the opening months of next year.
